Death is by every measure a scary subject for most people. Trying to create a method for educating and assisting families and the terminally ill is a challenge. This challenge has been on my mind for many years. Earlier this year Heart’sWay Hospice created a DVD entitled The Final Approach that we believe is a significant tool that can be helpful to families and care providers. It is an enactment of the dying process by actors and is a gentle introduction to the process that is often veiled in fear and secrecy. Generally, most of us do not want to think about the death of anyone much less that of a family member. Those who have seen the video have made comments like the following: (a person who saw it before the death of his loved one)”I am so glad I saw it even though I was not too sure I wanted to see it. It made the process much easier” (to a number of persons who have seen the video after the death of a family member) I wished I had seen that before, It would have made the process so much easier and so many of my questions would have been answered. (a professional in the hospice care) " it was presented gently and was not scary at all, it's something everyone who's involved in hospice needs to see".
These comments are representative of the responses we have had. Those of us at Heart’sWay Hospice hope and pray that this DVD will be helpful to those families facing the final journey. The trailer for the DVD can be seen on our website at http://www.heartswayhospice.org/the_final_approach.
